SUB: - The Olave Award for Outstanding Service to the Community 2009-2011.

Dear Sir/Madam,

The Olave Award is “an International Award to honour the memory of the World Chief Guide, Olave, Lady Baden- Powell and to keep alive her beilief in the spirit of service.”

The Olave Award is awarded by WAGGGS to groups of Girl Guides/Girl Scouts who have contributed to positive change in the community.  The Community Service or Cmmunity Development Project can be long or short-term, of any size, within the home country of abroad.

This triennium, the Olave Award is being linked to the Global Action Theme (GAT) for the first time We are looking for projects that have a link to one or all of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  The MDG topics are:

MDG 1:  Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

MDG 2:  Achieve universal primary education

MDG 3: Promote gender equality and empowere women

MDG 4: Reduce child mortality

MDG 5: Improve maternal health

MDG 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

MDG 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

MDG 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

How have your members been involved with GAT/MDG projects at a local level? What community service/community development projects are girls/young women doing in your Association? How have they changed the lives of the people and community around them?  For example, they may have made the local area a more pleasant place to live through working on environmental issues’ promoted the empowerment and equality of girls and young women in their community’ or provided a service that helps improve the lives of those with HIV/Aids, malaria or other contagious diseases.

It is important that WAGGGS recognizes the efforts of these groups of young people.  We also want to promote the fact that our members are active members of their communities, making a difference to the lives of the people around them.  The Olave Award is a fantastic opportunity to recognize the girls who have been taking part in such projects.

This is now the time to start preparing your application for 2010.  Please send in your applications.  We want to show case as many projects as possible.  In every Member Organization we know there is at least one group carrying out a very successful Community Development or Community Service project, so why not give them the chance of winning this most prestigious WAGGGS Award by nominating them?  The winners will be announced at the World Conference in July 2011.

Attached are Appendix 1 (information sheet) and Appendix II (nomination form).   Please return the nomination form to the National Headquarter by 30th September, 2010 and the log books should be sent to National Headquarter on or before 30th October, 2010.  After the judgment at National Headquarter, the best log book will be sent to WAGGGS.

We look forward to receiving your applications.

Thanking You.

  Yours Sincerely,
